A Boy and His Pet

There comes a time in every young boy's life when he needs a friend,...a companion,...a pet. While we would love for our son to have a dog (perhaps a nice, trained, beautiful Boxer??) we live in a flat in a 4 story apartment building with no yard space of our own. So, the next step down size-wise would be a cat. Unfortunately for Eli, Zach and I are both anti-cat and wouldn't let one into our flat even if dear old Aunt Sally brought one with her. I don't really have an Aunt Sally, but you get the point. Hmm..what about a bird?!? My track record with birds is sad. I once left my childhood parakeet, Lemondrop, in the path of the spraying exterminator and a few short hours later we had dead bugs and a dead bird. So, what kind of pet is left for an excited young lad?!?!

None other than the beloved goldfish. Meet Donald and Dorothy. We bought these earlier in the week and Eli spends a good 15 minutes a time gazing at them, talking to them, and trying to taste their water. Yes, really. Before actually arriving at the pet store he announced, "I want a Dorothy fish." You see, Eli is a big Elmo fan and Elmo has a goldfish named Dorothy, hence the reason he thinks they're called "Dorothy fish." Anyway, he was slightly disappointed when he began talking to his great new friends,...companions,...pets, and neither of them responded at all.
